Elijah Wood Mesmerised By Soccer Rivalry

Elijah Wood: Elijah Wood Mesmerised By Soccer Rivalry: "THE LORD OF THE RINGS star ELIJAH WOOD got a shocking taste of fervent fans of British soccer while preparing for his new film HOOLIGANS when he went to see a game between longtime London rivals WEST HAM UNITED and MILLWALL.

The 24-year-old actor, who plays an American with a love of the violent side of soccer in the film, was told the London derby would be a good game to watch if he wanted to get a feel for boiling passions.
He says, 'We got to sit with the West Ham supporters, and there were more than 1,000 police officers waiting for something to kick off."

Wood discovers soccer hooligans to be a real kick

Wood discovers soccer hooligans to be a real kick: "Suddenly, there are soccer movies everywhere -- 'Kicking & Screaming,' a comedy; 'The Game of Their Lives,' a drama based on a real-life event and 'Hooligans,' a drama based on reality.

Elijah Wood stars in 'Hooligans,' playing an American who was kicked out of Harvard before moving to England to become an extreme 'supporter,' joining a gang of West Ham fans. Wood, naturally, was exposed to some hard-core soccer hooligans.

'Some are cool and collected,' he told Premiere magazine. 'Those are the most dangerous ones. It's the live wires you don't have to worry about. It's a lot of . . . talk.'

Do's and don'ts:

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Scott Ostler's words of 'advice' for the newly minted 49er quarterback, Alex Smith: 'Don't sweat the manners. Coach [Mike] Nolan said he is impressed with your politeness, like how you pull your chair out for your mother."

Review of "Sin City", with Elijah Wood

Film Article | Reuters.com: "Outfitted in extreme makeup, prosthetics and scars, actors stride through this adult fantasyland with mock belligerence. Many of Hollywood's top young talent turn up -- Brittany Murphy, Elijah Wood, Devon Aoki, Carla Gugino, Alexis Bledel. Women are nearly all babes with breasts either exposed or popping out of bodices while derrieres peek through fishnet stockings and garters. Guys dress in leather, T-shirts and trench coats to slip down dark streets and alleys.

The drawings that make up the production design are of a forbidding metropolis, mostly in black and white so that blood spurts from bodies like milk from a cow. Color highlights key objects -- a bright red lipstick and dress or locks of shiny gold. Dialogue is purple: 'She smells like an angel ought to smell' or 'I ain't playing hard to get -- I'm impossible to get!'"

Elijah Wood goes from hobbit to one of the 'Hooligans'

U-San Bernardino County Sun - FILM: "Before he ever threw a punch in 'Hooligans,' Elijah Wood had to fight just to get the movie made.

The 'Lord of the Rings' star helped secure financing for the film by Lexi Alexander, which made its world premiere at the South by Southwest film festival, about the violent gangs - or 'firms' - associated with England's soccer teams.

'I read the script and loved it and then we met, and this is before it had any financial backing, before it was greenlit to go - quite some time before - and then we met, hit it off really well,' Wood said. 'In meeting her and seeing her vision and her passion, it was kind of infectious.'

And the reaction from Alexander, a former world karate and kickboxing champ turned writer-director?"
